God is Not Surprised by You

For the choir director: A psalm of David. O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.

Psalms 139:1 NLT

Jeremiah 1:5 says before you were formed in your mother’s womb, God knew you. All of your days are already written out in God’s book (see Psalms 139:16). You may get surprised, frustrated, and disappointed at how you behave, what you think, and what comes out of your mouth, but God already knew about it. You must remember that your life is a story that is already completed in God’s book, but you are actively playing your part in real time. Nothing you do surprises God, and the good news is that no matter how out of order you may act, God loves you regardless of it and still chose to adopt you into His family. He has already chosen to forgive every sinful act, negative thought, and careless word concerning you.

God knew you would mess up, so He sent Jesus to save you. He knew you would need forgiveness, so even in your sin, He still paved a way for you (see Romans 5:8). Each morning you have a brand new batch of mercy to cover you (see Lamentations 3:23), and a Savior that understands you and is available anytime of the day (see Hebrews 4:15-16). All of this does not warrant an excuse to live a careless, sinful life, but His grace is meant to cover you if you genuinely make mistakes. You are human and you will slip up every now and again, no matter how holy you think you are. This is why you need to lean on God every chance that you get, because in and of yourself, and in your own strength, you’ll fail on a daily basis. He is your Helper in times of trouble. Save yourself unwanted emotional stress and just seek God. You can’t catch God off guard—He’s already prepared to answer your call. Christians need to learn that once you’ve repented for whatever the situation is, God remembers the sin no more (see Isaiah 43:25). Whatever you do, you can’t surprise God, so stop beating yourself up over something that God has already forgotten. You can’t progress if you’re at a standstill because you can’t get over that you acted in such a way, said a certain thing, or thought a less than pure thought. It’s time to move forward and press through with God.
